Have you ever tried parceling desserts? If yes, then you know what a pain it can be — the sugary sweet leaks on to your clothes, the cake turns dry and if there’s icing, it will probably stick to the box. This is why jarred desserts have become popular in the city; they are easy to carry and it’s hard to create a mess when eating them. Cake smooshed into a jar is a pretty clever idea, no matter how you slice it. All you need is a spoon or fork and you’re good to go. Jarred desserts, be it cake or pudding, are brilliant sweet treats for on-the-go meals, picnics and gifts. Some desserts in jars are baked or otherwise prepared right in the jar, while others are spooned into jars. Either way, the sparkling and pretty vessel and the appealing treat it holds make for a beautiful presentation.
Although not the first baker to introduce jarred desserts to Sri Lanka, “Bakes by Bella” has been in the forefront for a very long time – and for good reason. Many bakers limit themselves to serving just cake in jars, however, BB takes it a notch higher and offers its customers the choice of treating themselves to their favorite desserts, including S’mores, Chocolate mousse or even Panna cotta. The jars are not only appealing to the taste buds but also the eyes. The concept has become popular now because it’s convenient for take-away, easy to consume and also recyclable. And since the glass jars are simple and transparent, they allow for artistic intervention.
The store, located on the second floor of Liberty Arcade, is very compact but has a lot going on with really cool graffiti and decorations. They’ve got coloring books for adults, scrabble and so many Rubik’s Cubes. There’s so many things you can try out while you wait for your sweet mess.
Salted Caramel (Rs.550)
The salted caramel fad is one of the better ones to come around, in my opinion. Salted caramel has all the sweetness of the candy, but the salt adds a nice counterpoint to the sweet. The pure salted caramel jar by BBB is very smooth and comforting. It will be a great combination with vanilla ice cream.
Victoria Sponge (Rs.450)
Most people would opt for something chocolatey to satisfy their cravings, but don’t underestimate this bottle of joy. The Victoria Sponge has layers of strawberries, cream, jam and vanilla sponge. The vanilla sponge was moist and delicious, which was combined very well with the rest of the layers. We felt like it was a bit pricey for the size of the jar, however, her high quality ingredients make it worthwhile.
Not many Sri Lankans have had the pleasure of trying out S’mores. It’s a traditional campfire treat popular in the US which consists of a fire-roasted marshmallow and a layer of chocolate, sandwiched between two pieces of graham cracker. BBB’s S’mores were so very chocolatey, but since it was dark chocolate, it wasn’t too sweet either. The biscuit base was excellent, while the marshmallow topping could’ve been mixed in a bit better. The marshmallows were melted and stuck together, making it almost impossible to mix it with the rest of the contents of the jar.
Fudge Brownie Shake (Rs.750)
The first thought that came into mind when I first gulped down the Fudge Brownie Shake was Milo. This frothy drink tastes exactly like Milo with chunks of fudgy brownies. BBB has more varieties in its Cake Shake range, including PBJ’s, Birthday Cake Shake, Red Velvet, S’mores and Oreo.
Everything we tried were over Rs.450 which seemed to be a bit too much for an 8-ounce jar. But, if you’re looking for quality, we’d definitely recommend Bakes By Bella for all your chocolatey cravings. BBB also delivers upon request.
