President calls for action against those who disrupt peace

Right to protests ensured – President

President Maithripala Sirisena says the government has ensured democratic rights for groups to engage in peaceful protests against the government. The Head of State speaking at a function at the Temple Trees pertaining to the Right to Information Act said those protesting against the government should ponder on the freedom they have to engage in protests.

The President said those who protest, demonstrate and engage in hunger strikes must be aware that they have received the freedom to protest, demonstrate and shout slogans on the streets freely. President Sirisena questioned as to how responsibly protesters are utilising this freedom, how orderly they are when engaging in this freedom and how far they use the freedom for the benefit for the country’s future.

President Maithripala Sirisena said members of the government have a responsibility to conduct themselves in a manner that charges levelled against the United People’s Freedom Alliance led government are not hurled at the present government.

The President added the culture politicians and government officials are familiar with is not appropriate. President Sirisena said this culture should be done away with.

The Head of State noted fraud, corruption and theft is reported while not all politicians are involved in such acts. The President said the dislike among the people towards politicians should undergo a change.
