BAN ace chase for historic win in Colombo

2017-03-19

Bangladesh secured a historic win in their 100th Test at the P Saravanamuttu Oval in Colombo. The Bangladeshis beat Sri Lanka by 4 wickets in the second Test to level the two match series 1-1. The tourists made an exhibition of how to chase tricky targets on a tough fifth day pitch at the oval against some probing bowling from the Sri Lankan spinners. After a jittery start in which they lost 2 for 22, the Bangladeshis built on a counter-punching partnership between Tamim Iqbal and Sabbir Rahman. Tamim top scored with 82 off just 125 balls and opened up nicely after judging the spin threat very well at the beginning of his innings.

The Sri Lankan bowlers were simply outplayed throughout the afternoon session in which the Bangladeshis employed caution and aggression in equal measures to face Dilruwan Perera and Rangana Herath whose bowling was not to be faulted. The same description fitted all five days in which the Bangladeshis simply played better than the Sri Lankans in a Test that ebbed and flowed throughout. The tourists chased down the target of 191 runs for the loss of 6 wickets to record just their 9th Test win and first against Sri Lanka. Tamim Iqbal speaking during the post match presentation described how they approached that exemplary chase.

Skipper Mushfiqur Rahim who was almost axed before the game expressed hope that this victory would bring about greater things in the future.

The first of three ODIs between the two teams is scheduled for the 25th of this month.
