Bakes By Bella Café reaching new heights

2017-04-08

Bakes by Bella strikes again! This time transitioning from a home baker to a café owner and we’re sure they had plenty of “Ah-ha!” moments in the process. Our previous review of Bakes by Bella focused on jarred desserts, as that was essentially what they were serving. However, this massive transition from ‘just jarred desserts’ to a whole new range of cakes, desserts, savories and even brunch, has taken BBB to a whole new standard. For some people, it’s a quintessential Sunday brunch spot; for others a weekday coffee-and-cake stop. It’s a convivial spot to head with a group of friends to share brunch platters or even desserts.

We were greeted by friendly staff who had a good knowledge of the menu. The café is filled with comfy seating and beautiful art, which makes you feel right at home. The BBB café can get quite crowded within a few minutes, but it can accommodate 4-5 groups. Though crowded as we walked in during lunch time we noticed the place was curated rather intriguingly. We sat under a dream catcher whilst enjoying our meal. The little touches of a what looked to imitate a vintage train station clock, the retro posters all over the front of the counter, the beakers with little flowers inside and the bookcase which contained various knickknacks in the corner, all contributed to a quirky, yet well thought and laid out chilled atmosphere.

Brunch – Eggs Benedict w/ Chicken Patty (Rs. 1,200)

An unquestionably satisfying feast for both the stomach and the eyes. The waffles were toasted to crisp light perfection; the two eggs were lovely little packages of golden gooey goodness bursting across the waffles once broken and the chewy Chicken Patty was a welcome addition. The Pol Sambol – how could Pol Sambol be this right? From flavor to texture to presentation, this little extra reminded us of what authentic Pol Sambol squeezed between two slices of bread made by mothers sending their kids off to school would be like. Additionally, if this Pol Sambol were added to a cheese and tomato sandwich or something of the sort – we’d bite and keep on biting.

Fudge Brownie Cakeshake (Rs.750)

We kid you not – we lost our marbles for the first few sips. This cakeshake was outrageously good. The concoction was rich but substantially light, the cream had just the right sweetness, and the overall feeling and taste of actually letting liquid fudge brownie goodness slide down your throat was too good to not tune out and get lost in the moment for a while. If by some bizarre twist this was all they had on the menu – we’d probably keep coming back. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Strawberry Cheesecake (Rs.480)

This dessert was loaded up with a layer of creamy cheesecake then swirled with a sweet strawberry sauce for a pop of color and flavor! We’d say it was worth the money!

In a short period of time, Bakes by Bella deserves its status as one of the most popular cafes in Colombo.
