JVP says Meethotamulla issue now turmoil


The JVP says the issue surrounding the collapse of the garbage dump in Meethotamulla has now turned into turmoil due to the conflicts among state officials.

Speaking at a media briefing at the JVP headquarters today Parliamentarian Vijitha Herath said certain individuals are attempting to fulfil personal political agendas.

The MP said claims have been made by Ministers and Chief Ministers part of the present government over the matter.

He said according to the Chief Minister of the Western Province Isura Devapriya Minister of Megapolis Development Patali Champika Ranawaka had a responsibility to solve the garbage issue but claimed he didn’t take the initiative.

MP Herath added according to Devapriya the responsibility for this tragedy should be bourne by Minister Ranawaka.

Commenting on the British company that was selected to address the matter MP Herath said according to the Chief Minister Minister Ranawaka deemed they weren’t the most suitable.

The JVP noted that such rifts indicate a tug of war within the government referring to it as a mafia.

He said the the government suggested relocating the garbage to Puttalam, Ja-Ela, Ekala and Othekele.

Referring to Othekele the MP said it is a populated area that faces floods annually when it rains and is situated near the Attanagalu Oya.

MP Herath added in May last year Othekele experienced floods 16 feet high.
