The Joint Opposition says the Meethotamulla issue arose as efforts by the United People’s Freedom Alliance led government to solve the garbage issue were brought to a halt by the present government.

Parliamentarian Gamini Lokuge said the members of the Joint Opposition will determine further action pertaining to the gazette.

MP Lokuge said they will decide on what should be done in the near future adding much has happened since the government came into power two years ago.

The Parliamentarian questioned the Ministry of Megapolis and how it has benefited the public adding regardless of development initiatives the garbage issue has not been solved.

United National Party Parliamentarian Harshana Rajakaruna says the gazette issued by the President last night will provide a permanent solution to the garbage issue.

MP Rajakaruna requested all parties to assist in efforts to solve the garbage issue.

The special gazette notification issued under the directives of President Maithripala Sirisena making the disposal of garbage an essential service for local government bodies is currently in effect.

The President’s Media Division said the gazette was issued on the directives of the President last night.

The gazette will also allow legal action to be taken against any individual that disrupts the process of disposing garbage.

The gazette was issued yesterday with effect from midnight under No.16 of the Public Security Act.

According to the order local government bodies must see to the collection of garbage, transportation, disposal and storage. Persons who threaten, disrupt duties, and obstruct individuals engaged in garbage collection and threatening them to leave employment will be dealt with the law.

Police have been granted authority to arrest such individuals without an arrest warrant.

The gazette stated such individuals can be subject to rigours imprisonment by producing them before a magistrate.
