President Maithripala Sirisena has directed his attention to vesting authority of solid waste management to a central authority.
Accordingly the Head of State advised relevant authorities, to take required steps to formulate a suitable programme for this initiative.
The President made these comments at a meeting at the Ministry of Disaster Management this morning to discuss the progress on compensating those affected by the collapse of the garbage dump in Meethotamulla last week.
The President’s Media Division noted, President Sirisena issued directives to the Secretary to the President to ensure weekly meetings under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe until all issues surrounding the garbage dump collapse and other related concerns are addressed.
The President also called on officials to ensure the prompt distribution of relief among those affected by the collapse of the garbage dump in Meethotamulla.
It was also decided to grant 50,000 rupees to families displaced as a result of the garbage dump collapse in Meethotamulla for a period of three months.
Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa speaking to NewsRadio said the 50,000 rupees will be granted to around 300 families.
