Australia explores options to rehabilitate Lankan refugees in Tamil Nadu

2017-05-19

Australia says it is exploring options with the Sri Lankan and Tamil Nadu government to rehabilitate Lankan refugees in Tamil Nadu.

Indian Media reported the Commissioner of the Australian Border Force NAME met Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan and discussed options including Australian assistance in rehabilitating a number of Sri Lankan refugees in Tamil Nadu.

The Hindu quoted the commissioner saying “It is in our interest that the size of the Sri Lankan refugees here are reduced; this in turn indirectly reduces that probability of further illegal maritime ventures to Australia.

So, we are very interested in working with the Tamil Nadu govt, NGOs like the UNHCR, to ensure that there is a continuous resettlement program”.

He added while Australia was criticized for turning back refugees who arrive in boats, the country had the third-largest in taking in refugees.
