The agreement for the government to officially take over the Neville Fernando Hospital was signed before President Maithripala Sirisena this morning.

The ceremony was held under the patronage of the President.

The government decided to acquire the hospital following the conflict surrounding the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine.

The owner of the hospital, Dr. Neville Fernando, also agreed to hand over the hospital to the government. This is one of the solutions listed in the proposal to solve the SAITM issue.

It has been decided to use the Neville Fernando Hospital as a teaching hospital after it is taken over by the government today where a Management Board will also be appointed.

The Neville Fernando Teaching Hospital will have a free patient treatment service and a paying ward as well.
