Palpita, Weeratunga not involved – Gammanpila

The Leader of the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya Udaya Gammanpila says Former Director General of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission Anusha Palpita and Former Presidential Secretary and former Chairman of the TRC Lalith Weeratunga were not involved in the decisions or distribution of sil material during the 2015 Presidential Election.

The Parliamentarian said the decision to distribute sil material was reached prior to the announcement of the Presidential Election.

MP Gammanpila claimed that the two cannot be charged over making distributions for the promotion of a candidate contesting the election.

The MP said this was signed by the time the 2015 Presidential Election was called on the 20th of November.

He noted if this was due to be as a promotion of the presidential candidate, then temples should have been informed to distribute the material before the 8th of January however adding no such order was issued.

He further stated they should have avoided temples that support the UNP and the JVP and only distributed the material at UPFA temples again adding this did not happen either.

The MP said those observing sil were not the people who were given the material, it was handed over to the temples.

He said it could have been distributed the following year but it has not been proven that the material was distributed to promote a presidential candidate.
