Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says the field of sports can be utilized to rid the country of racism and separatism.
Addressing a gathering in Matara the Premier noted at a time during the 30 year long conflict, when racism prevailed, sports helped unite the country.
Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said the country is united through sport and the country has its identity adding that during the 30 long conflict, when racism and divisions took place in society it was sports that united the country despite difference.
The Premier added that when considering cricket or the Olympics, racism was disregarded, no individual looked into whether the sports personality was a Muslim, Buddhist or a Hindu, the only concern was if they could win for the country adding that citizens were only concerned if the cricket team, the SAARC games team or if the Asian Games team could win.
Premier Wickremesinghe said at times such as this the country was united as Sri Lankans and stood for its players and worked together, and at a time when divisions existed sports united it.
