Govt to declare railway an essential service

The government has decided to declare railway services as an essential service.

Accordingly the gazette pertaining to the matter has been sent the President.

Speaking to NewsRadio, Deputy Minister of Transport Ashoka Abeysinghe said the railway service will be declared an essential service following the ratification by the President.

Meanwhile, the Transport Ministry has granted railway season ticket holders to travel aboard Sri Lanka Transport Board free of charge.

Deputy Minister Ashoka Abeysinghe said the Ministry will deploy additional bus journeys for the convenience of the commuters this evening.

Furthermore, discussions are underway to grant temporary route permits for bus owners, to deploy busses on specific routes.
