Minister of Local Government and Provincial Councils Faizer Mustapha will present the Local Authorities Elections Amendment Bill to the Chairman of the Elections Commission Mahinda Deshapriya today.
Accordingly elections watchdog the People’s Action for a Free and Fair Election says it hopes the gazette pertaining to the Bill will be issued promptly.
Speaking to NewsRadio Executive Director Rohana Hettiarachchi commended the government for taking measures to hold the impending local government polls.
Hettiarachchi added the final hurdle to conduct the Local Government polls is the issuance of the gazette of the Local Authorities Elections Amendment Bill.
He stated the bill was passed in Parliament and yesterday the Speaker of House signed the document therefore they have been informed that the Bill will be presented to the Chairman of the Elections Commission today.
Rohana Hettiarachchi added election monitors hope the Bill will be gazetted within a week.
