Detrimental decisions affected the economy -PM

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says several officials who made detrimental decisions pertaining to the country’s economy during the previous United People’s Freedom Alliance led government will be removed from their posts.

Speaking in Parliament on the second day of the Committee Stage Debate the Prime Minister said a decision in this regard will be reached at the conclusion of the 2018 Budget debate.

The Prime Minister said during the UPFA led government the Treasury was under the rule of the government claiming at present the Treasury and the Central Bank both come under the purview of the Parliament.

The Premier noted the Committee on Public Enterprise has been vested with certain powers while the Parliament Budget Committee has also been appointed.

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe noted the Secretaries in place at the time did not do the needful highlighting that such actions led to the country incurring massive debt.

The Premier said the government is attempting to pay off the debt and ease the burden on the public by controlling the Treasury through Parliament.
