Kandy to play host to Army in first home game

2017-11-19

Defending League Champions Kandy Sports Club will play host to Army Sports Club in their first home game of the 2017/18 Dialog Rugby League season at the Nittawela Stadium at 4 this evening.

Kandy SC has recorded wins over CH&FC and Police SC and remains the only unbeaten team in the League this season.

With results going in their favour this weekend, the boys from the Hill Capital can return to the summit of the Points Table with a win this evening.

Gayan Weeraratne’s team has not been at their supreme best thus far but has done enough to get over the line.

Play-maker Fazil Marija will remain sidelined along with Roshan Weeraratne for today’s encounter but Kandy’s famed three-quarter line will be gearing up to put on a show.

Coach Sean Wijeysinghe will also expect a better display from their forwards especially during scrums and line-outs.

Army on the other hand has made an impact in the League following the appointment of Coach Nilufer Ibrahim.

After a heartbreaking loss during the season opener against Navy, the Soldiers registered a nail biting win over CH&FC last week.

Gayan Salinda’s place kicking has helped their cause, however experienced forwards led by Ashoka Jayalal will be expected to smother the ball to minimize Kandy’s scoring opportunities today.

Thusitha Senanayake’s men will be looking to play a counter attacking game while being on damage control mode during the 80 minute game.

Heavy grass at the Nittawela surface may hinder some dashing moves of the speedy backs of Kandy but Army may need some divine intervention to thwart the Champions’ winning run.

A disciplined game before boisterous fans will help Kandy dislodge Havelocks SC from the summit at end of the third week’s proceedings of the Dialog Rugby League.
