The indefinite strike action launched by the Locomotive Engine Drivers Union is currently underway.
Speaking to NewsRadio Union Secretary Indika Dodangoda said the strike was launched in opposition to the employment of engine drivers assistants without due process.
Nevertheless Dodangoda said several office trains will remain active despite the trade union action.
Meanwhile the Ministry of Transport says it is prepared to face any strike action.
Speaking to NewsRadio Deputy Minister of Transport Ashoka Abeysinghe said a special discussion was held with several railway trade unions last evening.
The Deputy Minister noted the Ministry is constantly prepared to engage in further discussions to resolve any prevailing issues.
