President to make an official request from Putin

President Maithripala Sirisena says he will make an official request to Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the suspension imposed on Sri Lanka tea imports.

The Head of State made this statement at an event held in Matale.

Russia placed temporary restrictions on imports of all agricultural products from Sri Lanka, including tea, after it found an insect in the packaging of one consignment of tea from Sri Lanka. The restriction will come into place from tomorrow.

Tea from Sri Lanka accounts for 23 percent of Russia’s tea market, with other supplies from India, Kenya, China and Vietnam.

Meanwhile, three Ministers are scheduled to leave for Russia tonight in order to hold discussions over the restriction.
