‘Disregard for Speaker caused parliament unrest’

2018-01-12

United National Party General Secretary Minister Kabir Hashim says the recent commotion which arose in Parliament was caused by a group of Opposition members who attempted disregard the authority of the Speaker in Parliament.

Speaking at a rally in Puttalam the Minister said the recent unrest in Parliament was regrettable.

The Minister said certain people incapable of respecting Parliament, previously used their ruling power to carry out state terrorism and prevented the opposition from speaking up in Parliament in the past.

Minister Hashim noted today however while misusing the freedom the government has allowed, those who attempted to bypass rules and regulations set by the Speaker and those who thought they could control Parliament with physical power learnt a good lesson on Wednesday.

The Minister stressed even good governance has its limits adding the UNP believes the opposition should conduct themselves in a disciplined manner.
