MR claims he is not the leader of the SLPP

Former President Kurunegala District Parliamentarian Mahinda Rajapaksa has claimed that he is not the leader of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna.

The Former President remarked he had no intention of working alongside the Sri Lanka Freedom Party to carry out the activities of Local Government bodies, following the conclusion of the upcoming Local Government Election.

Speaking to the BBC Sandeshaya in an interview, MP Mahinda Rajapaksa further stated the SLPP would not join the Sri Lanka Freedom Party to form a coalition, in the event the SLPP secured a significant number of seats during elections.

MP Rajapaksa also remarked that supporting another party aside from the SLFP as a former leader was not a breach of discipline, charging a true breach of policy and the fall of the SLFP took place on the 8th of January.

The Former President also expressed his views regarding the official term of the incumbent President.

MP Rajapaksa stated that if the Supreme Court agreed with the stance of the Attorney General and if the 19th constitutional amendment did not apply to President Maithripala Sirisena, then neither would it apply to him and former President Chandrika Kumaratunga.

Former President Rajapaksa said under such circumstances former President’s can contest the Presidential Election once again, despite contesting twice before.

MP Rajapaksa maintained his stance that according to the present law in the country the Presidents term cannot be extended.
