2018-01-13

Election Watchdog Campaign for Free and Fair Elections today urged political parties and independent groups to refrain from using illegal propaganda materials during the election campaign.

Executive director of CaFFE Keerthi Tennakoon said, several incidents of election law violations have been reported in the Northern Province.

Keerthi Tennakoon added materials belonging to proscribed organisations have also been used for campaigning.

He said, “Several Local Government Election contestants from the Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu areas in the Jaffna district, have been using illegal propaganda materials. We have received reports of LTTE materials and other slogans of banned organisation being used. This is against the country’s civil law and prohibited by the election law during the period leading up to polls. We strongly urge contestants to refrain from using such materiel. As an election monitor, we urge political parties, contestants and independent contestants from using prohibited materials and slogans during election campaigns.”
