Gazette notices on liquor to be reversed


President Maithripala Sirisena has decided to re-consider the gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Finance which amended the business hours of liquor stores and removed the ban imposed on women to purchase alcohol.

Accordingly, the Head of State said his views on alcohol control were expressed to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Minister of Finance Mangala Samaraweera.

Taking to Twitter, the President said the positive outcomes of his intervention will soon be seen.

Meanwhile, speaking at a rally held in Agalawatte today, President Sirisena said the gazette notification will be ineffective from tomorrow.

Accordingly, liquor stores will not be permitted to extend its business hours till 10pm, while the prohibition of selling alcohol to women and employing women in places where alcohol is manufactured or being sold will come into effect from tomorrow.
