President Maithripala Sirisena says a number of factors influenced him to leave the previous tenure of the United People’s Freedom Alliance led government as the common candidate.
Speaking at a rally of the United People’s Freedom Alliance held in Kegalle, the Head of State said he was involved in protecting Former President MP Mahinda Rajapaksa until the last moment of him becoming the common candidate.
The President said he informed Former President Rajapaksa to refrain from holding the Presidential Election three months prior. President Sirisena said he warned MP Mahinda Rajapaksa that he will be defeated if he holds the election early.
President Maithripala Sirisena said the warning was made before he was even considered as the common candidate.
The President also commented on the upcoming Local Government Election. The Head of State said the Sri Lanka Freedom Party was strengthened during the past two years by him after being defeated twice in 2015.
President Sirisena said the SLFP and the UPFA has rapidly strengthened during the past two months.
President Maithripala Sirisena said the SLFP will definitely claim victory at the upcoming Local Government Election.
