Vass Gunawardena sentenced over Shani case

Former Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Vass Gunawardena has been sentenced to a five year rigorous imprisonment over levelling death threats and verbally assaulting former Assistant Superintendent of Police Shani Abeysekera in 2013.

The order was issued by Colombo High Court Judge Gihan Kulathunga.

NewsRadio Court correspondent said the suspect was also fined 25,000 rupees in addition to the prison term.

Meanwhile the Judge also ordered the extension of the imprisonment by one year if the suspect fails to pay the fine.

The former DIG had threatened former ASP Shani Abeysekera while he was being questioned over the killing of businessman Mohamed Siyam at the premises of the Criminal Investigations Department.

Accordingly the Attorney General filed a case against the suspect on six indictments.

The High Court Judge ruled that the Former Senior DIG was found guilty on one count while five other charges were not proven without a reasonable doubt and therefore acquitted the suspect of the indictments.
