United National Party backbenchers have requested Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to form an independent government with more power to the UNP.

The backbenchers made the request during a discussion held at the Temple Trees this afternoon.

The discussion included Parliamentarians Nalin Bandara, Bandula Lal Bandarigoda, Wijepala Hettiarachchi, JC Alavathuwala and Mayantha Dissanayake.

Speaking to NewsRadio following the discussion, MP Wijepala Hettiarachchi said full control of the government should be vested with the United National Party. CUT

MP Hettiarachchi said a discussion was held to form a UNP government with the approval of the President, however, full control of the government should be vested with the Prime Minister.

The Parliamentarian stated SLFPers can join the government, however, they need to decide if they will join the government from the UNP and work under the elephant symbol.

The MP claimed there won’t be any alliance or coalition however stated this is their stance as a national government.

MP Hettiarachchi agreed the current national government includes members of the SLFP as well, however, he stated the control of the government should be given to the UNP.
