NICs for O/Level candidates in April

The Department of Registration of Persons says the issuance of National Identity Cards for students sitting the 2018 Ordinary Level examination will commence from April.

Accordingly the Department has requested all candidates to submit relevant application forms before the 31st of March.

The Department stressed a circular containing guidelines in this regard has been issued to all Principals.

The NICs will be issued to all candidates who have turned 15 years of age.

According to the circular candidates must attach a photograph and a copy of their birth certificate along with the application and direct it to the Department of Registration of Persons through Principals.

The Department meanwhile said the issuance of NICs will be delayed if Principals submit the applications closer to the date of the commencement of the examination.

The Department also said errors such as the issuance of two NICs containing the same NIC number have been issued as the process was handled manually in 2014.

Commissioner General of the Department Viyani Gunathilaka said such errors have been omitted through the introduction of a computerised system.

Accordingly 350,000 new National Identity Cards will be issued to students within the year.
