Minister of Western and Megapolis Development Patali Champika Ranawaka says a special programme will be initiated to manage the waste generating through the Financial City project in future.

Speaking at a media briefing this morning Minister Ranawaka said a special waste management centre will be set up.

The Minister said waste accumulating in future through the financial city, technology city and others will not be handed over to municipal councils or pradeshiya sabhas.

The Minister also commented on alleged reports of the relocation of the garbage dump in Meethotamulla under the United People’s Freedom Alliance led government.

Minister Ranawaka added statements are being circulated that the waste in Colombo was due to be taken to Puttalam, adding Gotabaya Rajapaksa was on the verge of completing the process, but that the present government did not take the programme forward.

The Minister said the statements were made by opportunists.

He said the UPFA government received Cabinet approval for the proposal in August 2014 and till 2015 failed to do anything about the matter.
