Afghanistan stuns SA in Youth World Cup opener

The Afghanistan Under 19 side defeated hosts South Africa by seven wickets to kick-start a memorable Youth World Cup campaign in Kimberley this evening.

The upset win was scripted by the Afghan blowers who bundled the hosts out for 129 in 29.1 overs.

18-year-old leg spinner Shafiqullah Ghafari picked up 6 for 15 in 9.1 overs to decimate the African batting line-up while Fazal Haque and Noor Ahmad chipped in with two wickets apiece.

Skipper Bryce Parsons top scored with 40 off 42 deliveries while Gerald Coetzee scored 38 from 23 balls.

The Afghan batters completed the chase in 25 over losing just 3 wickets to register a memorable win in the World Cup opener.

For the Afghans, Imran Mir top scored with 57 of 48 deliveries while Ibrahim Zadran made 52 off 72 delivers.

Meanwhile four matches of the Youth World Cup will be worked-off tomorrow in South Africa.
