The curtains on the first-round fixtures of the 2019/2020 Inter-Club Rugby League tournament will come down this week, with four games scheduled to be played in Colombo. Lowly-placed Sri Lanka Air Force will play host to CH & FC in Ratmalana this evening to kick-start the proceedings.
The Airmen are yet to taste victory and are languishing at the bottom of the Points Table while CH has secured a solitary win during the first-round games. The battle of the bottom-seeds will likely favour the CH-side led by Rohitha Rajapaksa who possess an army of national colours men.
Meanwhile, during today’s second game, Army Sports Club will take on high-riding Police team in Welisera. Police have been impressive in their attack play this season, and have four wins including a shock victory over Havelock SC. The Cops are third in the standings and could go on to battle it out for the League Crown later in the season. Sri Lanka Army on the other hand have managed only one win and are placed sixth in the Points Table. Both games will be worked-off from 4pm.
Meanwhile, tomorrow, title challengers CR & FC will aim to return to winning ways when they host Navy SC at Longdon Place at 4pm. Havelock SC handed a 30-22 defeat last week on the CR side and relegated the Reds to fourth in the standings. Despite CR kicking-off the season impressively, they failed to win the last two games. Navy on the other hand secured the second win last week, after beating Army SC 35-34 in the nail-biting contest. Navy remains fifth in the points table.
The final game of the first round will see last year’s runners-up Havelock Sports Club taking on Defending Champions Kandy SC at Havelock Park under floodlights. Havies returned to the title race after securing a crucial win last week over CR. Five wins from six outings have helped Havies to second in the Points Table and will be counting on their forwards to undo the Champions at home tomorrow. Champions Kandy remains unbeaten in the League and is in prime position to retain the league title. Kandy has produced another title winning squad this season who managed to outclass CH last week. A win in tomorrow’s encounter will also help the Champions to put clear day light between them and the title challengers. The game will get underway at 6.30pm.
