Sri Lanka claims nail biting 5 wicket win

Sri Lanka claimed a nail biting 5 wickets win over Australia in the 1st Twenty20 International in Melbourne a short while ago.

Chasing a 169 run target, in-form Asela Gunaratne scored a 37 ball 52 to help Sri Lanka score 172 for 5 in the final delivery of the match.

Dilshan Munaweera scored 44 while flamboyant Niroshan Dickwella scored a quickfire 30.

Earlier, the Australians were restricted to 168 for 6 after Upul Tharanga sent the hosts into bat.

Captain Aaron Finch top scored for the Australia with a 34 ball 43.

Lasith Malinga who returned to the side after almost a year out of the team, picked up 2 wickets for 29.

Today, Sri Lanka handed an international debut for paceman Vikum Sanjaya who impressed during the tour game against Australia’s Prime Minister’s XI on Wednesday.

Meanwhile Australia handed caps for Michael Klinger, Billiy Stanlake and Ashton Turner.

Sri Lanka is touring Australia on the back of a 2-1 T20 series win over South Africa and has a superior winning record over the hosts in T20s.

The second match of the on-going series will be worked off in Geelong on Sunday.
