Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva says 116 individuals from across the country who visited inmates held at the Kandakadu Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre during the past few days, have been instructed to self-isolate.

The Army Commander said if the virus has transmitted to the community from any infected person who travelled to various parts of the island, authorities will be able to detect such cases during the course of the week.

Meanwhile, Polonnaruwa Regional Health Director Dr. Sarath Jayasinghe said PCR tests have been conducted on 605 inmates, officers and other staff of the Kandakadu Treatment Centre.

He said following the detection of new COVID-19 cases, a programme is underway to determine whether the coronavirus is now prevalent in the community.

Dr. Sarath Jayasinghe said since officials must investigate places the infected persons had visited and associated during the past 30 days, the task is complicated.
