6,000 PCR tests needed daily if spread continues

The Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health has informed Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi that in the event the coronavirus begins spreading rapidly the number of PCR tests conducted daily should be increased to 6,000.

The Health Minister stated that the PCR tests is conducted in 15 state and private sector laboratories and advised officials to ensure there is no shortage of protective equipment for health workers in laboratories.

The Minister issued these directives when the COVID-19 National Evacuation Committee convened today.

Minister Wanniarachchi issued directives to ensure that there is no shortage in personal protective equipment provided to persons of all sectors engaged in coronavirus mitigation efforts.

The Minister also called for a stringent system to be formulated to ensure the possible spread of the virus could be contained and the protective health measures that should be adhered by health and security forces members.
