Coronavirus strain in Denmark detected in SL

Several persons infected with the new coronavirus strain spreading in Denmark have been identified within the Colombo city limits.

Director of the Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine of the University of Sri Jayawardenapura Dr. Chandima Jeewandara said three such individuals have been identified.

He noted additionally an individual infected with the new coronavirus strain found in England was also detected from a quarantine centre.

He added the relevant individual had arrived from Kuwait. Dr. Jeewandara said the new strains were identified after testing samples obtained from the COVID-19 patients detected over the past month.

He stressed however that all COVID-19 patients identified from the country have the same coronavirus strain while it is persons arriving from overseas that carry other strains.

He said the public must be made aware of the various coronavirus strains.

He further stated coronavirus strains identified at quarantine centres have not spread to the country, indicating the efficiency of the health units.

Dr. Chandima Jeewandara also noted that tests are being conducted regarding variants of the coronavirus strain found in Sri Lanka including whether re-infection is possible and how it will affect vaccines.
