COVID-19 infections rise to 2,039

Two persons tested positive for the coronavirus today increasing the number of infections in the country to 2,039.

The two new cases have been identified as Sri Lankan returnees from Bangladesh.

One of them had been housed at the Pampaimadu quarantine centre while the other was at the Waikkal quarantine centre.

The Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health said the number of COVID-19 patients who recovered increased to 1,678.

17 persons who contracted COVID-19 recovered and were discharged from hospitals during the past 24 hours.

Six persons were discharged from the Iranawila Hospital and four each from the Welikanda Base Hospital and the Teldeniya Base Hospital.

Two COVID-19 patients were released from the National Institute of Infectious Diseases while one individual was discharged from the Kattankudy Base Hospital during the past 24 hours.

749 persons who returned from overseas recently tested positive for COVID-19, while 904 Navy personnel have also contracted the novel coronavirus in Sri Lanka.

350 COVID-19 patients are currently receiving medical treatment at 11 hospitals across the country.

40 persons who are suspected to have contracted the virus are also under medical observation.

Meanwhile, 11 deaths in Sri Lanka have also been linked to COVID-19.
