Minister of Health Pavithra Wanniarachchi has warned that the present situation in the country in relation to COVID-19, can deteriorate if the public continues to disregard advice issued by the health officials.

Speaking at the National Operation Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak, Minister Wanniarachchi said the number of coronavirus cases can steeply rise if the public fails to follow health and safety guidelines.

She said according to present data, cases in a number of countries rose steeply only after citizens of such nations failed to heed orders.

The Health Minister added that COVID-19 cases in the United States, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Iran and Italy rose sharply after the confirmation of the 100th case.

She however said cases in Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan showed only a gradual increase after citizens of such countries strictly followed health and safety guidelines.

Minister of Health Pavithra Wanniarachchi claimed that the government has taken all measures to contain the spread of the virus in the country.

Therefore, she is of the view that if citizens followed the guidelines issued by authorities, Sri Lanka will be able to contain the COVID-19 cases in the near future.
