A final decision on the leadership of the United National Party will be announced next Friday.
UNP General Secretary Parliamentarian Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said the parliamentary group was unable to reach a final decision at a meeting held yesterday.
Nevertheless, Parliamentarian Ranjith Madduma Bandara said a majority of MP’s supported a proposal that the party leadership should be vested with MP Sajith Premadasa.
MP Madduma Bandara explained that a total of 52 MP’s voted in favour of the relevant proposal.
The MP revealed although the Parliamentary group had requested to hold a vote to appoint the Party Leader at the meeting, the proposal had been faced with opposition.
MP Madduma Bandara said following which the group of MPs had been then asked if they wished to hold such a vote, at which point 90% of MP’s had agreed to hold one.
He noted when a vote had been held there had been over 50 MPs who had expressed their approval that Sajith Premadasa be appointed Party Leader.
The MP said the UNP hopes to form a broad alliance under the leadership of Sajith Premadasa, adding it will take all necessary steps towards the upcoming election.
MP Madduma Bandara added therefore an alliance will be formed to face the general election under the leadership of Sajith Premadasa, who will also be Prime Ministerial candidate and the leader of the alliance.
However, UNP General Secretary MP Akila Viraj Kariyawasam claimed that no such vote was ever taken in accordance with any acceptable protocol.
The MP charged it was unacceptable if only one group of MPs had held a vote.
He revealed it had however been decided to reach a final decision on the matter next Friday.
MP Kariyawasam noted some members were making statements regarding the matter without any regard for the party’s disciplinary code and this could not be condoned.
He added therefore such action will also be subject to discussion.
