Former Akuressa PS Chairman given 15yrs for rape

Former Chairman of the Akuressa Pradeshiya Sabha Saruwa Liyanage Sunil has been sentenced to a 15-year rigorous imprisonment, for raping a 14-year old girl.

The order was issued by Colombo High Court Judge Aditya Patabendige today.

The Judge imposed a 25,000-rupee fine on the former Pradeshiya Sabha member and also ordered him to pay a compensation fee of Rs.250,000 to the aggrieved party.

According to NewsRadio Court correspondent if he fails to pay the fine, he will be imprisoned for an additional year while failure to pay the compensation will lead to an additional fine.

The Former Chairman of the Akuressa Pradeshiya Sabha will also receive a separate two-year rigorous prison term, if the Rs.250,000 compensation is not paid to the aggrieved.

Saruwa Liyanage Sunil was accused and subsequently found guilty of raping a 14-year-old girl in 2012.
