Japan’s Health Ministry says a woman in her 80s in Japan’s Kanagawa Prefecture who has been infected with the new coronavirus has died.

This marked the first death from the virus in Japan.

Meanwhile Japan said it would allow some elderly passengers off a quarantined cruise ship and into government-designated lodging, as the number of new coronavirus cases on the vessel jumped to 218.

Thousands of passengers and crew on the Diamond Princess- the single largest cluster of infected people outside China- face several days more of quarantine, with many taking to social media to voice their concerns.

Some 242 deaths from the new coronavirus were recorded in the Chinese province of Hubei yesterday – the deadliest day of the outbreak.

But the new cases and deaths in the province have pushed the national death toll above 1,350 – with almost 60,000 infections in total.
