35 in the Presidential Race

A total of 35 persons have submitted nominations to contest the 2019 Presidential Election.

The Eighth Presidential Election is slated to be held on the 16th of November to replace Maithripala Sirisena as the Head of State.

A total of 15,992,096 persons are eligible to vote at the Presidential Election. Members of the Election Commission chaired by Mahinda Deshapriya commenced accepting nominations for the November 16th Polls from 9am today. The acceptance of nominations for the 2019 Presidential Election concluded at 11am.

Sajith Premadasa submitted nomination to contest the 2019 Presidential Election under the New Democratic Front ticket while Gotabaya Rajapaksa submitted nominations to contest the Polls under the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna ticket.

Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Former Army Commander Mahesh Senanayake also submitted nominations to contest the 2019 Presidential Election under the National People’s Movement and the National Peoples Party tickets, respectively.

Several former Parliamentarians also handed in nominations to contest the Election.

Elections Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya said two objections were filed over nominations submitted by individuals to contest the 2019 Presidential Election. The acceptance of objection concluded at 11.30am.

The Commission however rejected the two objections filed against nominations submitted this morning. Meanwhile, Parliamentarians Chamal Rajapaksa and Kumara Welgama withdrew from the Presidential race despite placing deposits to contest the November 16 polls.

The placing of deposits for the Presidential Election concluded at noon yesterday. 19 persons from recognised political parties, 19 independent contestants, and three others placed deposits to contest the Election.

Meanwhile, a special traffic and security plan are in place in the vicinity of the Election Secretariat in Rajagiriya.

NewsRadio Correspondent said the Special Task Force Personnel have been deployed to secure the Election Headquarters until the conclusion of the 2019 Presidential Election.
