Kandy Building collapse: Bodies of couple found

KANDY BUILDING COLLAPSE

The bodies of a couple who were buried under rubble following the collapse of a five-storey building on a house in Buwelikada, Kandy have been found.

The couples one-and-a-half-month-old infant who was rescued by Police and was admitted to the Kandy National Hospital passed away this morning.

The remains of the mother and father were found this afternoon.

The mother is a lecturer of the Badulla Open University and a lawyer by profession.

The father has been identified as a hotel owner in Kandy. Five persons were at the house at the time of the incident.

Police initially rescued two women who were trapped under the debris.

Kandy Senior Superintendent of Police Sudath Masinghe believes the incident had occurred, due to a landslide as a result of the incessant rain during the past few days.

The SSP noted the building collapse was reported around 5 this morning.

Due to the prompt response, the SSP noted they were able to rescue the two females from the debris.
