Danushka Gunathilaka ruled out of Asia Cup

September 14, 2018

Sri Lanka Cricket says all-rounder Danushka Gunathilaka has been ruled out of the Asia Cup with a lower back injury.

The left-hander who travelled with the team to the UAE, having last played a one-dayer in January earlier this year, will return home and as a result, Shehan Jayasuriya will join the squad as his replacement today.

Earlier in July, Gunathilaka was suspended for six international matches by SLC, for an alleged breach of code of conduct regulations.

This is not the first injury concern that has hit Sri Lanka ahead of the Asia Cup campaign, with batting mainstay Dinesh Chandimal having already been ruled out of the tournament with a broken middle finger.

Injury aside, the Lankans are also missing the services of offspinner Akila Dananjaya, who is expected to be away for some part of the tournament, as he awaits the birth of his first child.

Sri Lanka come into the tournament with a dismal run in ODI cricket, having won just 10 of the 39 ODIs played since the beginning of 2017.
