Govt responsible to protect athletes -PM

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa says it is a primary task of the government to provide quality and sufficient facilities for sports.
Speaking during an event at the Nelum Pokuna auditorium the Premier noted failures in the management for athletes representing Sri Lanka at the South Asian Games in Nepal cannot be forgiven.
Prime Minister Rajapaksa said several athletes performed while they were seriously ill adding however the athletes’ dedication to bring victory to the motherland could not be defeated by the setbacks.
Prime Minister Rajapaksa said it is the responsibility of the government to protect and manage athletes.
The Premier added the government will work to establish a Sports University of international standards based on its Policy Statement.
Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa further noted attempts made by the former United People’s Freedom Alliance government prior to 2015, to hold the Commonwealth Games in Hambantota, several factions criticised the move.
The Prime Minister stated the government was confident of being able to conduct the Commonwealth Games in Hambantota, as they believed it would’ve provided a boost to local athletes.
The Premier noted plans must be made to hold international sporting events in Sri Lanka.
