The Samagi Jana Balawegaya claims suspicions have arisen over attempts by the government to halt investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks by claiming the mastermind behind the attacks was identified as Naufer Maulavi, who is currently in the custody of security forces.

Speaking during the adjournment debate in Parliament, on the final report of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry which investigated the Easter attacks, MP Harsha De Silva said the report states the stage set by Naufer Maulavi is similar to that of the task fulfilled by the group which carried out the attacks.

He said it is the only statement which indicates he was involved in the attacks.

He stressed however if there is a lack of evidence to back the statement that he was the mastermind behind the attacks, it is suspicious whether it is an attempt to halt investigations.

Joining the debate State Minister Shehan Semasinghe said the final report by the Presidential Commission can be used to base future investigations.

He claimed several matters regarding the attacks have been revealed.

He also claimed the good governance government attempted to pin the blame for the attacks on President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the then opposition.

SJB Parliamentarian Thushara Indunil Amarasena also speaking during the adjournment debate said the government is attempting to highlight Naufer Maulavi as the mastermind behind the attacks due to pressure by various groups including Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith.
