22-year-old Praveen Jayawickrama’s record breaking spell helped Sri Lanka defeat Bangladesh by 209 runs in the second and final Test match and seal a 1-0 series win at the Pallekele International Cricket stadium this morning.
Chasing a mammoth 437-run target to win the match, Bangladesh was skittled out for 227 with Jayawickrama picking up 5/86.
In doing so, Jayawickrama finished with a match bag of 11/178, and eclipsed the Sri Lankan record for best figures by a bowler on debut.
He was ably supported by Ramesh Mendis in the second innings by picking up 4/103.
For Bangladesh, Mushfiqur Rahim top scored with 40.
Sri Lanka after opting to bat, went on to post 493/7d in the first innings with Dimuth Karunaratne and Lahiru Thirimanne making centuries.
The hosts declared the second innings on 194/9, setting an uphill task for Bangladeshis to save the series who managed only 251 in their first essay.
Clinical Lankan spinners then took all 10 wickets in the second innings and sealed the win with two sessions to spare.
The opening match of the series played at the same venue ended in a draw.
Sri Lanka will next head to Bangladesh for a One Day International series later this month.
