Governor of the Central Province Lalith U Gamage says a report has been called from several state institutions including the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau, in order to determine the cause for the building collapse in Buwelikada, Kandy this morning.
He claimed there are several illegal constructions in Kandy which could lead to similar incidents in future.
He added stern legal action must be taken in this regard adding that citizens also have a responsibility to prevent such incidents from happening.
The Governor noted however that the cause for today’s building collapse has not been determined yet.
Meanwhile Coordinator of the Disaster Management Centre Indika Ranaweera said the National Building Research Organization commenced preliminary investigations and will compile a report in this regard.
Ranaweera said the DMC hopes to take future measures based on the recommendations in the report and on the directives of the District Secretariat.
He added the DMC will also notify the Commissioner of the Kandy Municipal Council and other relevant institutions pertaining to other houses in the area as well that are at risk, based on the NBRO report.
