The Ceylon Teachers’ Union says even though schools are due to close tomorrow for the first school term, a majority of students are yet to receive uniform material.
Secretary of the Union Joseph Stalin speaking at a media briefing today said students must be provided uniform material before school starts.
He said the government decided to provide material instead of vouchers, due to convenience.
Stalin said although students have been provided material for uniforms, a majority of them have only received half of the material adding that when officials the Ministry of Education were inquired of the matter they claimed it must be managed by the State Ministry of School Infrastructure and Education Services.
He charged State Minister of Women and Child Development, Preschools & Primary Education, School Infrastructure & Education Services Piyal Nishantha of commenting on providing biscuits and other facilities to students while neglecting important duties.
