‘Port City must be monitored by Parliament’

Parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella says the former good governance government also discussed members who should be named to monitor activities at the Colombo Port City economic zone.
Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo the Parliamentarian said the Governor of the Central Bank and the Secretary to the Ministry of Finance should be part of the relevant Board of Directors.
MP Kiriella said it is important that the Colombo Port City is monitored by Parliament.
He added discussions were held pertaining to the Port City during the term of the good governance government as well adding however that they focused on making the project favourable to the country.
MP Kiriella claimed through the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill the President can appoint any individual to the Commission, with no need for qualifications.
Joining the media briefing Samagi Jana Balawegaya Parliamentarian Eran Wickramaratne said the government is attempting to approve several recommendations of the Presidential Commission appointed to investigate incidents of political vengeance between 2015 and 2019.
MP Wickramaratne said a proposal was tabled before Parliament to implement several recommendations of the Commission.
The MP added the recommendations include abolishing the civic rights of several Parliamentarians.
He noted the proposal tabled in Parliament states several criminal cases that are still being heard must be abandoned.
