President of Sri Lanka Cricket Shammi Silva says the squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup is a strong side capable of big change.

Speaking at the media briefing to reveal the Lankan squad Shammi Silva said new Captain Dimuth Karunaratne performed remarkably well in South Africa.

He said the National Selectors reached a unanimous decision to appoint Karunaratne as captain.

He added although they had other options for captaincy among senior players like Angelo Mathews, Lasith Malinga and Dinesh Chandimal they decided to appoint Dimuth Karunaratne claiming they believed in him and realized he was an individual who could gather the strength of the team.

Speaking on the exclusion of Off-Spinner Akila Dhananjaya Chief Selector Asantha Demel said “After Akila’s bowling action was changed, he has not performed very well and we don’t see his bowling to be very effective. If we consider Akila Dhananjaya and Dhananjaya de Silva, I should say that Dhananjaya de Silva is ahead of Akila in terms of his bowling. It’s hard for us to accommodate two Off-Spinners in the team and that’s why we have selected the two leg spinners Vandersay and Jeevan Mendis.”

Demel commenting on the inclusion of non-frequent players said the team needs experience.

Speaking on Lasith Malinga’s imminent retirement, SLC President Shammi Silva said he was a necessity in the team and is one of the best bowlers Sri Lanka has.

Speaking at the media briefing today, he said “Lasith Malinga is a world class bowler and we need him in the team. But as a captain he could not get the team to work with him. This is something we saw Dimuth do very well. Malinga has been performing very well in the IPL and that itself is enough practice for him for the world cup.”

Speaking at the briefing, newly appointed ODI captain Dimuth called on the middle order batsmen to play an explosive striking game.
