SLC says elections will not be delayed
December 14, 2018
The Election Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket says it has not taken any decision to delay the conduct of elections or calling of nominations for the election of office bearers of Sri Lanka Cricket.
In a statement, Justice PWDC Jayathilake on behalf of the Election Committee of SLC said it has no legal provision to cancel or postpone the election of SLC office bearers following the issuance of a gazette in September this year.
While rejecting speculative media reports, the SLC Election Committee said it will proceed with the election process as per notice served upon the membership.
In May, the court of appeal issued an injunction order preventing the conduct of Sri Lanka cricket elections based on a petition filed by former SLC Secretary Nishantha Ranatunga.
However subsequent to a court verdict, in November, a three-member elections committee was appointed to conduct the impending polls.
Accordingly the nominations for SLC elections are due to be accepted from today while objections will be accepted until the 31st of this month.
Meanwhile, in July, the International Cricket Council asked Sri Lanka to hold elections for Sri Lanka Cricket board within six months.
The council said, failing to conduct election will result in ICC reconsidering Sri Lanka’s membership status in the ICC.
