Police say the traffic lane regulations which were in effect today were a success this morning.

When inquired by NewsRadio the Director, Motor Traffic and Road Safety of Sri Lanka Police, SSP Indika Hapugoda said slight traffic congestion was reported in the morning due to the adverse weather.

Hapugoda noted officers had been deployed on special traffic duty in the Western Province, following which the traffic congestion was minimized.

SSP Hapugoda claimed if the regulations are implemented in a stringent manner, road accidents and traffic congestion can be minimized, which in turn allows commuters to reach destinations on time.

The traffic lane regulations and the priority bus lane project are being strictly enforced from today along Galle Road, High-level Road, Baseline Road and Sri Jayewardenepura Mawatha between 6am and 9am and 4pm and 8pm.

Police said motorists who violate the regulations will not be fined while legal action will not be taken either this week.

Motorists and the registered owners of vehicles found to be violating the regulations will instead be identified via CCTV and drone footage and will be warned and educated of the traffic regulations.
