West Indies defeated Sri Lanka by 4 wickets despite a hat-trick for Akila Dananjaya in the opening Twenty20 International of the three-match series in Antigua this morning.
Chasing a below-par 132 to clinch the win, the Windies reached the target in 13.1 overs losing 6 wickets.
West Indies openers Evin Lewis and Lendl Simmons laid the platform after putting on 52 in just 3.2 overs before Lewis was dismissed for 28 by Akila Dananjaya.
The wicket of Lewis then unfolded unexpected drama as Dananjaya went on to become the third Sri Lankan and 13th player overall to take a T20 hat-trick.
He dismissed Lewis, Chris Gayle and Nicholas Pooran in consecutive deliveries in the fourth over.
Simmons went on to make 26 but it was skipper Kieron Pollard who bludgeoned his way to 38 in 11 deliveries to take the game away from the Lankans.
Pollard also became only the second batsman in the history of T20Is to hit six sixes in an over.
Interestingly, Pollard slammed the six sixes off Dananjaya.
In the latter part of the innings Wanindu Hasaranga picked up 3 for 12 but could not prevent the Windies from clinching the series opener with 41 balls to spare.
Earlier after put into bat, Sri Lanka could only muster 131/9 in their 20 overs.
Debutant Pathum Nissanka scored 39 off 34 deliveries while Niroshan Dickwella’s fearless knock yielded 33 in 29 balls.
Despite the efforts of the duo, the visitors could not post a challenging total as Sri Lankan seniors faltered cheaply.
The second game of the series is scheduled to be held on Saturday morning.
